The street market was created by the community and exists for the community. It provides a focus for the Broadway Market neighbourhood: a place to meet, chat and rest as well as shop. It’s an example of a revived local High Street. It’s been described as the most successful community street market in London.
The market benefits the whole of Hackney. The 2010 report for Hackney Council by consultants at The Retail Group found that it generated a gross income to the borough of £1.9 million. Expansion since then suggests it now generates substantially more than £2 million a year.
Broadway Market Projects cic is the not-for-profit operating arm of Broadway Market Traders’ and Residents’ Association. Surplus funds go to the association to fund local community projects, especially schools, youth organisations and pensioners’ groups.
The schoolyard market exists specifically to benefit London Fields school but it also provides a free platform for non-profit organisations - for example St Joseph’s Hospice, the Hackney Society and the Great Drag Race.
